'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' US Trailer

Even though this is a remake of the fairly solid original Swedish version, where the character of Lisbeth Salander was played by the very capable Noomi Rapace, I can’t deny that David Fincher’s US remake doesn’t look somewhat enticing. Calling on his music video background, he’s cut a trailer that undeniably gives you chills if you’re familiar with any of Stieg Larsson’s source material. Now, we just have to see if the movie can live up to the quality of the trailer when it is released this year on December 21 (a Christmas movie, really?).

Are you a fan of these books, or do you think they were overrated/overhyped? Will you go see the American remake? How well do you think it will be received by American audiences? And how much censoring do you think they’ll do for this version?

I really did not like this book. I quit about 1/2-way through.

The last bit of the trailer is pretty cool, but overall, i thought the trailer wasn't very good — I think it suffered from the flawed source material.

I know this is blasphemous in the thriller community, but sweet Moses, I just did not get the fascination with this crappily-written narrative of a game of Clue.

Haven't read the book yet, and with my growing list of To Be Read, I don't know if I'll ever get to it. I will be guilty of watching the movie without reading the book. 😛

  3. Peter Dawes says:

Loved the Swedish version. Am a little skeptical that the US version will capture the same gritty feel, but I'm willing to wait and see.

Alas, the book sits on my bookshelf, waiting for me to read past Chapter Two.

@David – I don't think you're alone in your feelings. I know a fair share of people who just didn't like these books at all. I personally think they were a bit overhyped, but I liked them. I think there are much better writers out there in the mystery/thriller genre (I prefer Michael Connelly's stuff), but some of the characters were interesting.

@Kate – Think a lot of people are guilty of shelving this book. It can be a bit of a dry read.

@Peter – I doubt the American version can live up to the gritty Swedish version, but if anyone can pull it off, it's David Fincher.

    Hey Conor,

I'm a huge fan of the Swedish films, saw them before I'd even considered reading the books. Now, I've got all the books but am seriously afraid I might not be able to hack it. Some of the scenes were really disturbing, and though I absolutely LOVED Lisbeth, the plot, all three movies (especially the first and third), I'm not sure if I could handle the literary, drawn out and detailed descriptions of certain parts :/
Lisbeth is truly a favorite of mine, and Rapace played her to perfection. I think I'll have a hard time seeing anyone else play her, and having James Bond as Blomkvist is hard to overlook. But hey, maybe they'll do great.

And yes, I agree w/Peter about the grittiness. The ones from Sweden really captured the brutality and horrifying violence involved. America's got a lot to live up to.
